SEPTEMBER
Happy Labor Day. ITBS Exams.
OCTOBER
10/8/13
Dear Students,
Tomorrow we will be brainstorming, writing, and fine-tuning a thesis. Take a peek at the essay topic for your very first writing portfolio. Happy reading!
Essay Topic for Writing Portfolio 1:
Look back at “West End School Has Comestible Curriculum” (pp.22-23). Suppose you have been asked to speak to your classmates about starting a similar program at your school. You have to persuade them that a Scrumptious Schoolyard is a great idea. Write a persuasive essay using at least two details from the passage and three Unit 1 words (orange book) to support your position.

10/15/13
Dear 6th Grade,
I've re-posted your paper topic. It should appear in complete form this time (complete handout). Make sure your essay draft is finished by Friday in the "Shaping the Essay" section of the handout (yes, you received a small extension today :-) Thanks for the hard work!
10/18/13
Dear Students,
I have bronchitis and will not be in school today :-(
Please note the following for class today:
1) Begin the peer response sheet to your essay draft. Some of you already began this peer response. You must find a partner to work with. The peer response sheet is to check a partner's writing, but the focus is the content (ex. use of concrete detail vs. commentary) and general organization rather than grammar. You can write on the peer response sheet, but you will need a separate piece of paper to answer some questions. Save all work! We will be gathering all work in a writing portfolio next week.
2) If for some reason you do not have your draft, you must either finish the draft in class or work on your next vocab unit, unit 4, that is due next Friday. (You may skip the unit 1-3 review section in the vocab book). You should already have a copy of the peer response sheet, but it is posted below as well for your reference.
All the Best,
--Ms. Vargas
